The fitness of rental property may run counter to one's desire

    0
Dunedin City Council's plan to bring in warrants of fitness for rental properties could backfire if landlords pass on the cost of upgrading their houses to tenants otter case, a community advocacy group says.

The council is going to draft legislation to enforce the warrants, it was revealed on Thursday, and already has the support of one party in parliament.

Councils have the right to draft their own laws, know as local bills, fr4 pcb and if they put up a good case parliament usually passes them.

The Green Party says it would back the bill, as it has one of its own in the members' ballot to set mandatory insulation standards for rented properties.

Presbyterian Support Otago also supports it, and says it has been campaigning for warrants of fitness for more than a decade.

But its chief executive Gillian Bremner says she's worried it could end up costing tenants if property owners who are forced to fix up their houses raise rents to cover the cost label sticker.
